The Washington State Senate is on a listening tour to hear constituents’ thoughts on transit funding. When legislators arrive in Seattle on Monday, October 14th, be there to show support or testify on how transit funding is critical to our city and state’s economic health.

What: State Senate transportation listening tour
When: October 14, 2013, 6pm-9pm
Where: First Presbyterian Church, 1013 8th Avenue, Seattle
Cost: Free
RSVP: Click here so we have an estimate of the number of people attending

Action Requested:

Attend the October 14 listening tour and urge lawmakers to find a transit funding solution. Consider including the following points in your message:

  • Sustainable transit and road funding is critical for both employers and employees
  • King County has 30 percent of the state’s population, 40 percent of its jobs and half of its payroll
  • 17% cuts to transit will affect 7 out of every 10 transit riders and make it harder to get to work
  • But this is not just a King County problem; failure to pass HB 1954 will put our state at a competitive disadvantage

Or, if you cannot attend, please take a moment to share your thoughts on transit funding online, by clicking here.

Neighborhood Update – October 2013

Pioneer Square Business Improvement AreaTwo wonderful pieces of news for the neighborhood.

1. The Pioneer Square BIA expansion was passed unanimously by City Council on Monday September 23rd. This ensures that Pioneer Square will have resources for on-going economic development for years to come. What does this mean to me you ask? If you want additional information please visit our BIA Expansion page on our web-site or e-mail BIA@pioneersquare.org and one of our team will answer your questions. On behalf of  the BIA Ratepayer Board, I would like to thank all of the neighborhood business owners and staff who stepped up to ensure that this happened. It was truly a team effort. Well done everyone!

2. Yesterday afternoon the City Council passed a piece of legislation that allows the development at 200 Occidental to move forward (PDF of Council Bill). The Community Benefits of this development include several components….activating the east edge of Occidental Park (something the neighborhood has long wanted/needed), brings much needed market rate residential apartments to Pioneer Square, and lastly, the developer will be purchasing and installing a Portland Loo….something else Pioneer Square has long needed. This too was an effort that required many partners. Our thanks to everyone who worked on the various aspects of this project.

Thanks to everyone for their on-going support and belief in a better Pioneer Square. See you in the neighborhood!

Letter from the West Precinct Commander

Seattle Police Department

September 14th, 2013

To Our Pioneer Square Residents, Business Owners, Employees, Guardians and Visitors:

Many of you may know by now, a horrific double stabbing occurred in Pioneer Square last night at 2nd Ave. Ext. S. & S. Jackson St. at approximately 10:30PM.  An adult male has since been pronounced dead at Harborview Medical Center and an adult female is being cared for there.   We believe that only one suspect was involved and he was placed into custody at the scene by two of our SWAT Officers who were patrolling nearby at 5th S./S. Jackson when the 911 call was broadcast.  The adult male suspect was booked into King County Jail early this morning.

SPD Homicide detectives continue their investigation in order to provide as complete a picture as possible for the King County Prosecutors Office to present charges in court.

West Precinct Officers on all three watches and other support units will continue to provide proactive foot, bike and car patrols in Pioneer Square and its surrounding neighborhoods as they were last night.  As previously planned for, we will also have significantly more staffing in Pioneer Square and adjacent neighborhoods tomorrow afternoon and night as 67,000+ community members come to CenturyLink Field.  I will be on site and in command of all Seattle Police Units working inside and outside CenturyLink Field and surrounding neighborhoods tomorrow.

No words can adequately express the sorrow we have for the victims, their families, friends and co-workers.  We want to thank the witnesses who called 911 and who stepped forward to help the two victims, putting themselves at risk by doing so.

Captain Dermody

West Precinct Commander
