Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Construction Closures – Highlights for Friday, Sept. 14 – Monday, Sept. 24

Corridor-wide:

  • Viaduct reinforcement work will close all lanes of southbound SR 99 between the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge at the following times:
    • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Sunday, Sept. 16 – the morning of Friday, Sept. 21.
    • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Sunday, Sept. 24 – the morning of Friday, Sept. 28.

 

North:

Monday, Sept. 17 through Wednesday, Sept. 19

  • Parking will close and flaggers will alternate one-way traffic on Thomas Street between Sixth Avenue North and Taylor Avenue North from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Monday, Sept. 17 through Thursday, Sept. 20

  • Parking will be closed around-the-clock on Harrison Street between Broad Street and Sixth Avenue North and flaggers will direct traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Monday, Sept. 17, through Friday, Sept. 21

  • John Street will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily between Sixth Avenue North and Taylor Avenue North, and from Aurora Avenue North to the alley.
  • Parking will close and flaggers will alternate traffic on Sixth Avenue North between Thomas and John streets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

 

Central:

Monday, Sept. 17

  • The north parking lane and north lane on Marion Street will close between Alaskan Way and First Avenue from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monday, Sept. 17, through Friday, Sept. 21

  • The southbound parking lane on Western Avenue between Marion and Columbia streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, through Friday, Sept. 21

  • The right travel lane and the parking lane on Marion Street between Alaskan Way and First Avenue will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.

 

South:

Friday, Sept. 14, through Monday, Sept. 17

  • All lanes of northbound SR 99 will be closed between South Royal Brougham Way and the West Seattle Bridge from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The on-ramps to and from South Royal Brougham Way will remain open to serve event traffic.
  • The left lane of southbound SR 99 will be closed between South Royal Brougham Way and the West Seattle Bridge from 11 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
  • The following streets will be closed from 7 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday morning:
    • South Atlantic Street west of Colorado Avenue South.
    • East Marginal Way South between South Hanford Street and South Atlantic Street.

SR 99 Tunnel Project | South Holgate Street to South King Street Project

Waterfront Update: Friday, Sept. 14 – Thursday, Sept. 20

Construction overview

  • Northbound SR 99 will be closed between S Royal Brougham Way and the West Seattle Bridge from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. On-ramps to and from S Royal Brougham Way will remain open to serve weekend event traffic. Crews will be putting finishing touches to the second of two side-by-side bridges that replace the viaduct’s south end. When reopened, the northbound bridge will carry two lanes of traffic and one bus lane. The southbound bridge will have three general purpose lanes.   • The left lane of southbound SR 99 will be closed between S Royal Brougham Way and the West Seattle Bridge from 11 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday.
  • Work on the Pike Place Market garage pedestrian improvements is getting underway on Monday, Sept. 17. This work includes pedestrian lighting, widened sidewalks, curb ramps and pedestrian crossings in the area under the viaduct at the entrance to the Pike Place Market, and at the bottom of the hill climb. Currently, eight paid parking spaces are impacted by lighting work. Next month, there will be additional parking impacts when crews switch to sidewalk and curb ramp construction. Access to the Pike Place Market garage remains open during construction.

Continuing work

  • Ongoing work to install underground monitoring equipment, which is a part of a comprehensive program, helps crews minimize ground movement and protect structures during tunneling. During the upcoming week, work in this program will occur:
    • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday: Crews will shift the southbound lane on Western Avenue between Columbia and Marion streets. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
    • 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday: Marion Street will be reduced to one lane between Alaskan Way and First Avenue.
  • Viaduct reinforcement work continues. All southbound lanes of the viaduct from the north end of the Battery Street Tunnel to the West Seattle Bridge will be closed nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

Weekday Work:

Traffic Advisory:

  • On the weekend of September 15th and 16th Pine and Union will be closed to through traffic at Broadway. However, right turns will be allowed at Broadway

  • Saturday  7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Loud impact work under a noise variance, including concrete breaking, may begin at 8:00 a.m.
  • Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Note Regarding Water Main Installation:

Beginning in early October there will be water service interruptions as new connections are made along Jackson.  If your building will be affected you will receive notice of a water shutdown directly from Seattle Public Utilities at least 72 hours in advance.
