Community & Business Development Update – May 2013

Shopping in Pioneer Square

It’s springtime in Pioneer Square and more than flowers are popping up…

  • Cherry Street Coffee is opening their new location in Pioneer Square at 528 First Avenue South on Monday, May 6. They may not be ready to serve breakfast or lunch, but they will definitely be serving coffee.
  • The Lodge Sports Grille invites everyone in the neighborhood to come by on Friday, May 10 for their “official” Grand Opening at 4:00 and the kickoff for Seattle Beer Week.  (Who knew?)  We’ll even do a ribbon cutting.  In addition – because you’re part of the inner Pioneer Square circle – mention “Seattle Beer Week” to any of their bartenders and you’ll get happy hour prices on all beers all week!
  • Kevin and Julie Law, owners of Urban Light Studios in Greenwood, will be opening the doors of Axis Pioneer Square soon.  They’ll be in the beautifully renovated southern bay of the Globe Building, (still referred to as the old Elliott Bay Books space by many.)  Their new website isn’t up yet, but you can see why everyone is so excited by taking a peek at a post by a client here.
  • Did you hear that the Roq La Rue moved their gallery to 532 1st Ave S?  AND they are part of tonight’s First Thursday fun!  Stop by to meet Kirsten Anderson soon and welcome her to the neighborhood.
  • Tonight is opening night for Café Nordo’s SMOKED at The Kitchen by Delicatus.  “Hungry theater-goers are in for an evening of dirty dealings and heartsick cowboys… where the only thing comforting is the food.” Get your tickets now.  They won’t be here long.
  • Good news spreads fast.  Little Uncle is coming to Pioneer Square.  Seattle Magazine named them one of the Best New Restaurants of 2012.  Soon they’ll be at the corner of Yesler & Post Alley. Check out their website for updates.
  • Matt Dillon and Katherine Anderson’s London Plane spaces – both the one next to Caffe Umbria and the one at the northeast corner of Occidental Mall – are coming along nicely.
  • Tuesday Lunch at the Dock” at the loading dock behind 505 1st Ave S welcomes a different food truck every Tuesday from 11:00 to 2:00. The lineup for the weeks to come will feature Skillet, Where Ya At Matt, Falafel Salom, Jerk Station, and Monte Cristo.
  • And the Pike Place Farmers Market will be here on Wednesdays, starting June 19.

Stay posted as news unfolds via our Facebook and Twitter posts.  It’s going to be such a great summer in the neighborhood!

Community & Business Development Update – April 2013

Lunch at Rain Shadow Meats - Photo credit Gary BensonIt’s still happening in Pioneer Square.

Rain Shadow Meats Squared is open at 404 Occidental Ave S and rocking the neighborhood. Russ Flint and his team offer the most beautiful meats imaginable, gorgeous sandwiches and salads for lunch, a “butcher happy hour”, and a Saturday brunch (reservations only) that is a truly welcome addition to Pioneer Square.

Speaking of welcome additions, The Lodge Sports Grille has transformed the NW corner of 2nd Ave S & S King since their opening last month. The woodwork, the food, beer selection…where to begin? Shawn, Beth, Kelli, Ryan and all the gang are planning a ribbon cutting/grand opening celebration for the neighborhood on Friday, May 10. Besides celebrating all the great things happening in Pioneer Square, they thought it’d be a great way to kick off Seattle Beer Week. Stay tuned for details.

Watching E Smith Mercantile prepare to open in the Grand Central Park building was an exercise in patience. It was worth the wait. What will you find? Home goods, high quality basic apparel, gift items, and surprises. This summer they plan to open a very small craft cocktail bar in the back. You need to see it. Their mercantile concept makes for a great story. Jessie and Kate invite everyone to stop by for today’s grand opening, appropriately on First Thursday.

Got your tickets for Café Nordo’s production of SMOKED at The Kitchen by Delicatus yet? Opening night is May 2 – First Thursday, of course – and tickets are going fast. The modern day Spaghetti Western will include craft cocktails and “western inspired fare.”

With more restaurants in place, interest in talking about retail is on the rise. If you know of a quality business that would add value to our neighborhood, let us know.

Update to the Neighborhood – March 2013

Leslie Smith, Executive Director of the Alliance for Pioneer SquareTwo Things this Month

Changes to the Pioneer Square BIA

A goal critical to the future of the Alliance and the neighborhood… aligning the Pioneer Square BIA with the Historic District boundary was originally articulated in the Pioneer Square 2015 neighborhood plan. After many months of work the BIA Ratepayer Board and the Alliance for Pioneer Square are ready to make this happen. Comprehensive outreach for petition signing will begin in the next few weeks with a goal of having an expanded BIA in place in January of 2014.

Interested in learning the details and impact on your business? Interested in hosting a gathering for neighboring businesses or helping in other ways? Please contact leslie[at]pioneersquare.org.

Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) are special assessment districts, or “self help mechanisms” whereby business owners choose to assess themselves to revitalize and enhance neighborhood business districts. The oldest BIA within the City of Seattle, the Pioneer Square BIA was formed as a local business community effort to remain competitive in the marketplace. The legal authority for the establishment and management of BIAs is set forth in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) Chapter 35.87A and Seattle City Ordinance 111244.
